Why do you need to use a Boot CD to reset your Windows Password? To use
PCWin Recovery Windows Password Reset you must create a boot CD. All versions of Windows store local
account information in the Windows registry. This information is stored in
binary format and when Windows has started, the account information stored in
the registry is restricted. Because the registry data for user accounts is
locked when Windows is active (or running), you generally can't read or change
the account information directly in the registry. One way around this
restriction is to start the computer from a boot CD that loads an operating
system, these type of boot CD's are sometimes called Live CDs. Once the computer
is started with a live CD, Windows permissions that limit access to the account
data stored in the registry files are not active. Thus changes to the registry
to clear the password can be made with the appropriate software running from a
Live CD.
